BEING grandson of ska/reggae great Toots Hibbert, emerging producer Dwayne Hibbert said he was destined for a career in music.

“The starting of my music career was inevitable. Music is in my blood,” the 23-year-old told Jamaica Observer.

He is currently promoting his latest project, Bunx Around rhythm. Released in July on his DJ Blizzard Music imprint, the set features acts including Kalado, Harry Toddler, and Kemstsar, featuring Hibbert as Blizzi. According to Hibbert, he’s introducing a new blend of sounds and ideas to the game.

“My music is influenced by inspiration, cultures and current events. My style is authentic and speaks to many nations, not just the dancehall and reggae communities throughout the world,” he said.

“My grandfather is my main inspiration musically because of the time he takes to make sure his sound is right. Grandpa always told me to focus on music that will last for generations and that feeds the soul. Also, to know exactly what you want to hear and be able to play it,” he continued.

His grandfather, Toots Hibbert, is lead singer of the ska, rocksteady and reggae group Toots and the Maytals. The group is is known for classic songs including Sweet and Dandy, 54-46, Monkey Man, and Bam Bam. They had been one of reggae’s top touring acts for decades.

Hibbert, 73, won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2005 with True Love.


Born in Kingston, the fledging producer grew up in Hope Pastures, St Andrew.

He got his first taste of musical success at while attending Liberty Academy Preparatory School in Kingston.

“I started off on percussions. I went to California’s World Championships of the Performing Arts and I represented Jamaica in that regard. I won a silver and bronze medal. That passion later evolved into music production.”

Operating from his home studio in Washington Gardens, St Andrew, he has since produced One Link by Lutan Fyah, as well as worked alongside Grillaras for Famb’s Get Crunk EP.

“I have worked with Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Mr Vegas, Luciano, Toots and the Maytals, so many names. I am grateful to have gotten the chance to work with these people and I know as I continue the list will grow,” he added.
